The functioning of language in various spheres of human activity and with different aims of communication has resulted in its differentiation. This differentiation is predetermined by two factors: actual situation in which the language is being used and the aim of the communication.
The situation of communication has evolved two varieties of language – the spoken and the written. Of the two varieties of language, diachronically the spoken is primary and the written is secondary. Each of these varieties has developed its own features and qualities which in many ways may be regarded as opposed to each other.
Human relations involve a variety of social functions. This is the reason why there are different types of speech-making styles that caters for the different occasions. These different styles of speeches differ from their degree of intimacy and formality in consideration of the members of the gathering groups.
The basic types of speeches are the Informative Speech, the Evocative Speech, the Entertainment Speech, the Argumentative Speech and the Persuasive Speech.
When you deliver an informative speech, your primary purpose is to give your audience information that they did not already know, or to teach them more about a topic with which they are already familiar.
Аbility to give informative speeches is one of the most important skills one will ever master.
To gaze in wonder at that magnificent dome and elegant gardens will be a moment that you remember for the rest of your life. The Taj Mahal just takes your breath away. What is immediately striking is its graceful symmetry - geometric lines run through formal gardens ending in a white marble platform. Atop this platform is great white bulbous dome complemented by four towering minarets in each corner. The whole image shimmers in a reflecting pool flanked by beautiful gardens - the effect is magical. The first stretch by the reflecting pool is where most people pose for their photos. But we were impressed by the fresh, green gardens. As you approach through the gardens two mosques come into view flanking the Taj - both exquisitely carved and built of red sandstone. Unlike an informative speech, persuasive speeches are designed to do exactly that, persuade. Speakers can use more pointed language and should try to use the persuasive speech to change their audience’s point of view or encourage the audience to take a particular action. A key term to remember when giving a persuasive speech is advocate.
It is important to point out to the audience a clear goal which effectively delivers a message. There should be a mental dialogue between the audience and the speaker. The audience will respond in their mind to the speaker throughout the speech. It is important for the speaker to anticipate the questions and critiques that the audience may have.
