The development of an appropriate vocabulary is essential to the development of any subject. Words are the elements of language; language is the vehicle of ideas. By silent language thoughts are developed in the mind, and by written or spoken language thoughts are communicated to others.
Term – is a word or a combination of words, which define a notion (subject, a phenomenon, property, relation or a process) that is characteristic for the given field of science, technology, art or a sphere of social life.
A scientific text, whether in original or in translation, is different from other texts because scientific text is factual and information-oriented. The language of a scientific text is clear, simple and unambiguous. Since science is objective in its approach, the language of a scientific text is also more objective and subjectivity of the author is kept out of it. As we know, the personality of the author is reflected in his style of writing. This may be true in case of literary genres such as poetry, short story, novel, essay etc. But it is not applicable for scientific writing, specially in the case of natural sciences. That is why it is said that the language of scientific texts is not subjective but is objective.
As we know without the name or technical term a concept remains vague and ill-defined; the scientist is hindered in his mental processes, in his recording of what he thinks and does, and in his communication with others.
Some scholars’ definitions of translation focus on the approach of preserving the original or source text effect; to others (Nida and Taber, 1969/1982) translation consists of reformulating the message of the source text into the closest equivalent of the target language. They gave priority to meaning preservation as much as possible then focusing on the style. For others (Catford, 1965), translation is to substitute a piece of writing in one language by its corresponding piece of writing in another language.
The translation of scientific texts contributes to the modernization of our language. For instance, the translation of an ordinary book of 18th centuries from English into an Armenian language may only help in the development of the TL literature, but the translation of a modern scientific text not only enriches the TL but also helps in its modernization. The translation of scientific texts is an essential need in the modern Armenian context since most of the scientific texts are written in English, which is not the language of the masses. Consequently, most Armenians are not in a position to take advantage of the scientific developments within the nation and abroad. They do not get even the preliminary knowledge of scientific achievements. Due to its dependence on a foreign language for scientific learning, Armenian society has not made technical advances on par with the technically developed countries. To overcome this situation it is necessary that our scientists should be encouraged to develop scientific writings in Armenia language. In this case Armenian language will become capable of expressing new ideas in new norms. For this reason the issue of the translation of terms is of vital importance.
