In our paper we will focus mainly on the important parts of speech, i.e. adjectives and nouns in the Armenian and English languages.
The aim of our paper is to analyze English and Armenian adjective formation, as well as the compound nouns in Armenian and English.
Compounding forms a word out of two or more root morphemes. The words are called compounds or compound words. In Linguistics, compounds can be either native or borrowed. Native English roots are typically free morphemes, so that means native compounds are made out of independent words that can occur by themselves. In Greek and Latin, in contrast to English and Armenian, roots do not typically stand alone. So compounds are composed of bound roots. Compounds formed in English from borrowed Latin and Greek morphemes preserve this characteristic.
Adjectives are words expressing properties and characteristics of objects (e.g. կարմիր red, հետաքրքիր interesting, խելացի clever, etc.) and, hence, qualifying nouns.
Grammatically, four features are generally considered to be characteristic of English adjectives:
their syntactic function of attribute,
their syntactic function of predicative,
their taking of adverbial modifiers of degree (e.g. very),
their only grammatical category — the degrees of comparison.
The majority of English compounds fall into two types: vernacular compounds like teapot and blackbird, formed on principles typical of the Germanic languages. They are written in solid form, open form, or with hyphens. Classical compounds like agriculture and biography, based on the compounding patterns of Greek and Latin. They are generally written in solid form. There are also some minor groups, such as those containing prepositions, in the French style: commander-in-chief, man-at-arms, man of the church. Grammarians generally treat the vernacular form as the compound proper.
By formation words in the Armenian language divide into two groups: simple (պարզ) and compound (բաղադրյալ). Simple are called words that consist of one stem, e.g., տուն house, մարդ man, ես I, քաղաքից from the town, սեղաններ tables, կարդացի I read, etc.
To sum up the paper, we can come to the following conclusions.
In Armenian and English the adjective do not agree either in number, gender or case. The adjective has the following syntactical characteristics: in a sentence the adjective may be used as an attribute or as a predicative. Adjectives are divided into simple, derivative and compound.
